Can coaching really help with sales and growth?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but significant changes are rarely found by just teaching generic sales techniques alone.

In my experience, most SME owners, sales and growth issues don't come from a lack of effort or ambition, but from issues like:

• No consistent time carved out for sales, with urgent day-to-day tasks always taking priority
 • Unclear direction or shifting priorities, making it hard to know what really deserves focus
 • Assumptions about what customers want, rather than clarity on how they actually buy and decide
 • Offers that no longer stand out, feel dated, or fail to clearly explain why a customer should choose you
 • Decision fatigue and loss of confidence, especially when everything feels like it depends on you
 • Avoidance of uncomfortable but important activities, such as pricing conversations, follow-ups or tough decisions
 • Too many moving parts and poor alignment, resulting in energy being spread thin and progress slowing

Coaching helps remove these internal blockers. With my background in running sales and marketing agencies, as well as working with hundreds of other SME companies over the years, I know exactly what works, what doesn't, and what you will spend hours doing with little return and instead the actions required that actually drive sales and profitability.

Question 2

Do I need to commit to long-term coaching or mentoring?

Accepted Answer

No. Unlike many business coaches, I do not ask my clients to sign up to six, eight or twelve-month contracts. My coaching is tailored every time to each individual client's requirements as they all have different challenges, goals, strengths and weaknesses. Meaning standard 6, 8 or 12 month coaching programs have much less impact.

Sometimes I can deliver what's needed in a couple of sessions. Most mentoring and coaching clients looking for rapid growth and business turnarounds work with me for four to six months, and I have many longstanding clients that I'm still supporting after 15+ years of working together.

Another important factor is that many business owners are understandably cautious about long-term commitments, especially when time and budgets are under pressure.

That’s why my work is designed to:
 • Be flexible
 • Deliver value quickly
 • Stand on its own merits

I don't want you turning up to our sessions just because you signed up or paid for them in advance. My clients come back every month because they absolutely see the value and returns they get from their investment.

What does “fast-track turnaround” actually mean for my business?

I offer a fast-track turnaround because it's what I needed when I was struggling with my own businesses and couldn't seem to see the woods from the trees.

It is focuses on creating clear, practical movement quickly, rather than starting with long drawn-out evaluation exercises or standard (built-for-anyone) programmes.

This typically involves:
 • Getting clarity on what’s really holding you or the business back
 • Identifying the most impactful priorities for growth, sales or a turnaround
 • Making a list of next step actions and deciding who is going to own each task
 • Setting timescales and a success scoring system
 • Improving decision-making, focus and execution
 • Rebuilding your confidence and momentum as a leader

The aim is not theory or long-term planning for its own sake, but real progress you can feel and act on straight away.

How is this different from traditional business coaching?

Traditional business coaching is often open-ended, long-term and process-heavy. That works well for some people — but not for everyone.

My approach is more direct and practical. It’s designed for SME owners who want:

 • Straight-talking support
 • A commercial, real-world perspective
 • Tangible outcomes, not just good conversations

Many clients come to me after trying other coaching approaches and feeling they didn’t quite get the momentum they needed.

You don’t need to be “failing” to benefit from coaching or mentoring. Many successful SME owners seek support simply because they want clarity, momentum and an external perspective to help them move forward faster and avoid costly mistakes.

If you feel stuck, frustrated, or like you’re carrying everything yourself, it’s often a sign that the right support could make a meaningful difference.

I work primarily with SME business owners, directors and leaders across a very wide range of sectors. Despite what you may be thinking, myself, or any good coach, do not need to have an in-depth knowledge or vast experience of working with your exact business type. When we strip things back there are only two types of companies: they either sell a product or a service and sometimes a combination of both.

Whether you are a plumber or barrister or have a product that you want to stand out from your competitors, the mindset, processes, actions, changes... you need to make to turn things around will not be that different.

'What' you offer has less impact than you think, but 'How' you do it can change everything and I typically work with:
